It's Easy to Do a Bathroom Sink Install!

Renovating the bathroom offers instant gratification and a bathroom sink install is a great way to start your bathroom redo project! Bathrooms are just one of those primary rooms in our home that have the ability to look and 'feel' so completely shiny and new when revamped. A bathroom's appearance improves 100 percent even when given a thorough cleaning. Imagine the difference a brand spanking new bathroom sink will make to the room, and ultimately to your entire home.

Newly Installed Bathroom Sink

Of course, like every other home improvement project, there is always at least one wee stumbling block for home improvement newbies. Faucets are the bugaboo when it comes to bathroom sinks. You need to be able to fit old faucets to a new sink, and the job does not always go smoothly. The smart solution to this dilemma is to replace your old faucets, too! After all, bright new sparkling faucets are the icing on the cake, so to speak!

How to Install a Self-Rimming Countertop Sink

There are a number of beautiful bathroom sinks available for your renovation including pedestal sink, vessel sink, console sink, vanity bathroom top, vanity, wall hung, and the micro sink. However, if you are new to the home improvement game and set on doing it yourself, a self-rimming, drop-in bowl sink is the perfect one for you. This particular bathroom sink install is relatively easy for anyone to take on, and enhances the look of any bathroom.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Very Important! Shut off the water valve!
  2. Use the sink manufacturer's template (included with most new sinks) to draw the cutout line on the countertop (if a template is not included, simply set the sink upside down on the countertop, trace the outline, then draw another line about ¾ inch inside your first line which is now your cut line)
  3. Carefully drill a 3/8-inch starter hole inside the first cut line
  4. Cut along this line with a saber saw, but before finishing the cut, screw a scrap board longer than the span of the cutout to the center of the cutout to prevent it from falling when you finish cutting
  5. Remove the support after you finish the cut
  6. Place a bead of plumber's putty around the bottom edge of the drain-assembly housing's lip
  7. Press the housing into the drain hole
  8. Attach the gasket and washer
  9. Tighten up the locknut (use pliers to hold and prevent the housing turning at the same time)
  10. Remove excess plumber's putty
  11. Attach the tailpiece to the housing with the slip nut and washer
  12. Install your new faucet (this step will be quick and simple provided you follow your new faucet installation instructions to the letter)

Tips and Troubleshooting

  • Center a single sink from side to side and front to back on a counter
  • Cast iron sink installation will require the use of a bead of plumber's putty rather than adhesive, to seal the edges
  • If you are installing a recessed sink or frame-mounted sink, use the mounting clips or metal mounting strip supplied with your kit.
  • Look for little wedge-shaped seals that have a habit of sticking to the drainpipe. They enable the plastic nut to stick onto the stem of the sink. Carefully check out this configuration and be sure to duplicate the configuration on the new drainpipe.
  • Somewhat like bringing in the New Year, before installing the new sink, it's out with the old, and the ideal opportunity to do some heavy duty crud cleaning
  • Beware of caulking – it's really messy and finds its way into and onto everything. The best part of caulking is that it is a soft material and can be scraped off, and the worst part... well, just don't get caulking on your clothes because it will be there forever!
  • It's a brilliant idea to install the drain plug mechanism before installing the trap

Enjoy Your New Bathroom Sink

When all is said and done, and the sweat is mopped from your brow, everything fitting like a glove and up and working, sit back and say, "I did it myself!"
