Misc. home improvement projects are those things that all home owners have to do from time to time. Whether you're looking for a remodeling contractor or just trying to decide what color to paint your house, we've got you covered.

Setting Your Priorities

Every homeowner has a list of things they would like to do to their home or property. Even if you've bought a brand-new house, there are probably things that you'd like to change or little things that will need improvement soon after you move in.

The key to actually getting these projects off your to do list is setting priorities. If you can rank your to do list in order of what is most important to you, what is easiest or cheapest, or what will give you the most return on investment when you sell your home, that will be a big help in actually getting things done.

Make a list of all the projects you'd like to do, from the bathroom renovation to the new porch to painting the living room and replacing the woodwork in the kitchen.

Think about each of the following:

  • How much will this project cost?
  • How much time will it take?
  • What materials will I need?
  • Will I need to buy or rent any special equipment?
  • Should I hire a professional or can I do the work myself?
  • What's the motivation for doing this project? (Selling the house, personal pleasure, etc.)

Once you know all this information about each project, it will be much easier to decide what to do first and what to do later or put off indefinitely.

Getting Projects Done

Now that you know what project you want to tackle first, you need to keep your motivation up to actually get the projects done. If you don't have a way to motivate yourself, it's likely these projects will never get done.

Here are some tips for motivating yourself to get those home projects done:

  • Set a date. It doesn't have to be tomorrow, but plan a day or a weekend when you will at least start a project.
  • Make a list. Break down the whole project into a bunch of little steps. Maybe you can buy supplies one weekend, prep the space on a weeknight and do the painting or other improvement the next weekend rather than trying to do the whole thing in one day. Making a project seem smaller is great motivation.
  • Reward yourself. Come up with some kind of reward for yourself (and anyone in the family who helps) that you can indulge in when the work is done. A dinner out, renting a movie or buying new curtains for a freshly carpeted room are all great ideas.
