Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb
From LoveToKnow HomeImprovement
A compact fluorescent light bulb produces more light than a regular bulb and is more energy efficient.
Compact Fluorescent Light Bulb vs. a Standard Bulb
Compact Fluorescent light bulbs fit standard light sockets, but are manufactured in special shapes like spirals and the F-shaped bulb. Most compact fluorescent lamps have an integral ballast built into the bulb, eliminating the need for an additional ballast, which is required by standard fluorescent lamps.
This unique feature has reduced flickering and the slow response when first turned on that is traditionally experienced with fluorescent lighting, however it can still take up to three minutes for a compact fluorescent to reach its full illumination. Other differences to be aware of when considering compact fluorescents over incandescent lamps include:
Advantages
- Longer rated life – Traditional incandescent lamps have an average life span of 750-1,000 hours, while a compact fluorescent lamp averages between 8,000-15,000 hours.
- Uses less energy – Average energy consumption of a compact fluorescent light bulb is one-fifth to one-quarter that or a regular bulb.
- Initial purchase price is higher but it is recouped in energy savings.
Disadvantages
- Don't work well in cold temperatures.
- Shortened life span if frequently switched on and off.
- Not to be used in enclosed fixtures.
- Not to be used in light fixtures controlled by dimmers.
Compact Fluorescents and Dimmers
A select group of compact fluorescent light bulbs can be used on a dimmer switch, but check the package when making your purchase. The bulb must be manufactured to work with dimmers. GE makes Energy Smart Dimming Spirals, which are specifically created for this purpose. If you use a standard compact fluorescent with a dimmer switch, it can significantly reduce the life of the bulb and will also nullify the product warranty.
Compact Fluorescents and Cold Weather
One disadvantage to using a compact fluorescent light bulb is that they sometimes don't work in low temperatures. As the temperature lowers, light output falls, producing a dimmer light. It's important to note here, too, that most of these bulbs are not designed for outdoor use.
If you plan to use a compact fluorescent bulb outdoors, be sure to check the package and buy a bulb designed to be used outdoors. The Philips 18 watt SL/O Outdoor is one reliable choice that tolerates cold temperatures if it is protected from wind.
Colors
Fluorescent compact bulbs come in various colors, which affects the start-up of the lamp. This is due to phosphor activation. Phosphor coats the inside of the bulb and glows when the bulb is activated. Different phosphor combinations create a variety of color choices. If you are looking for a cool quality to light your room, you'll want to buy bulbs with higher ratings. And because bulbs differ from one manufacturer to another, it's a good idea to use one brand of bulb to produce a uniform color effect.
Along with these subtle differences, compact fluorescents are also available in deep colors like red, green, blue and yellow for specialty lighting needs.
Three-Way Bulbs
Another matter to consider when purchasing your compact fluorescent bulbs is to be sure bulbs to be used in a three-way lamp are designed for this purpose. Check the packaging to be sure. GE manufacturers a compact 3-way fluorescent lamp. These can be purchased at Home Depot, Ace Hardware and other home improvement stores. If you choose to use a regular compact fluorescent bulb in your 3-way lamp, it will work on the middle setting but negates the advantage to having a three-way lamp.
Why Buy Fluorescent Compacts
Compact fluorescent lamps are an energy efficient choice that is durable and long lasting. Because of this, consumers can buy a 15-watt compact fluorescent bulb to generate the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent bulb. They take a little time to reach their full brightness when first switched on, and the quality of light produced by these bulbs can vary from one manufacturer to another.
Look for products that have an Energy Star rating. Converting to the use of compact fluorescent bulbs is one way to help the environment by reducing electric consumption and thus pollution. Some utility companies and local government provide bulbs to the public in an effort to encourage their use, so check around your local area for more details.
