Faux Wood Crown Molding
If you are not a purist, then the faux wood crown moldings may be just what you are looking for. Some of these products are so simple they are merely peel and stick! The corners are cut precisely, and any trimming that needs to be done can be done with scissors or a utility knife. An added benefit to the faux wood moldings is that they tend to be much less expensive than wood.
The material used is usually a plastic or foam-based product that can be primed and painted with water-based paints. It can also be stained to look like real wood with water-based gel stains. The material is so lightweight is can often be installed by only one person.
Many times the manufacturer will specify the adhesive that you should use. If not, there are several adhesives to choose from:
- Dap Paneling and Foam Adhesive is low in volatile organic compounds.
- Liquid Nails Heavy Duty holds the most securely.
- Power Grab Construction Adhesive holds well but dries slowly.
If you have textured ceilings (also called popcorn ceilings) you will need to scrape off the texture where the easy to install crown molding will go. The adhesives will not adhere properly to texture and it may cause your moldings to fall off.
Once the crown molding is up you will probably want to caulk around it to seal any gaps. This will help give it that professional, finished look that makes a project look outstanding and not just average.
