Florida Home Improvement Expos
From LoveToKnow HomeImprovement
Florida home improvement expos provide Florida residents and contractors not only with attractive remodeling ideas, but also feature the latest innovations in hurricane protection. As long as you're in the remodeling process, there's not better time to secure or retrofit your home.
Hurricane Remodel Projects
After Hurricane Andrew devastated Homestead Florida on August 24, 1992, building codes changed. Along with that, new ideas are invented each year to make your home safer and still attractive. Attending Florida home improvement expos is one way to see these ideas firsthand to decide if they are right for your home.
Florida's hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 1 each year and presents an element to home remodeling unique to states along the coast. Each year residents strive to make a sturdier, safer home, built to withstand the pummeling of hurricane-force winds and projectiles. Improvements made to your home will cover everything from roofs to fences. Recent renovation and remodeling ideas being implemented include:
Hurricane Shutters
Current Florida code requires hurricane shutters or other protection on new houses. With this new demand comes selection. Today, hurricane shutters come in a variety of styles. You can view important information at WebTradeShows.com If you're considering installing hurricane or storm shutters, selections include:
- Storm panel hurricane shutters
- Accordion hurricane shutters
- Colonial hurricane shutters
- Bahama hurricane shutters
- Roll-down hurricane shutters
However, if you don't want to deal with maintaining shutters, another option is to install hurricane glass replacement windows. These specially designed windows are built to withstand high wind and accompanying debris. It's important to note, though, that these replacement windows will cost more than shutters, especially if you are retrofitting an older home.
Roofs
Roofs take a beating during a hurricane, and when the roof fails the home is compromised. After living through hurricane Charley, I learned that shingles are not designed to resist hurricane-force winds. Most of the damage experienced by homeowners in my neighborhood was due to shingles peeling off roofs leaving exposed wood, followed by heavy rains. Shingles grow brittle over time, and with the intense Florida heat shingles tend to need to be replaced more often than in a milder climate. Other roofing options include:
- Tile roofs (best if applied with foam adhesive or concrete)
- Metal roof (also known as a tin roof)
- Flat roof (should be three- or four-ply)
Safe Room
Adding a safe room to your home will require using an existing walk-in closet, guest bathroom or rearranging of existing walls to accommodate a small, interior area designed to be a safe room. When building a new home in Florida, a safe room can often be accommodated.
