Home Improvement Grants in New Jersey
From LoveToKnow HomeImprovement
Home improvement grants in New Jersey can help residents create a safer home or improve the return on their investment by providing the financial assistance needed to make repairs, improvements and even remodel.
Low-Income Home Improvement Grants
Grants are provided through New Jersey's state departments and agencies through an assortment of programs. One of these programs, known as Section 504 Program, assists low-income residents age 62 and older to help make sure their homes are safe. These funds are available for rural residents who own and occupy a dwelling that needs repair and can be used to improve or modernize a home, and to remove health and safety hazards. Home improvements under this program include:
- Foundation repairs
- Roof repairs
- Replacement or repair of water and waste disposal systems
- Structural repairs
Eligibility for these grants is determined on a county-by-county basis in combination with rural area maps. A list of eligible areas is available on the USDA's Rural Development New Jersey Page.
The maximum home improvement grant assistance available to eligible people is $7,500. Low interest loans are also available to work in tandem with the home improvement grant. However, the combined loan and grant amount cannot exceed $27,500. In order to qualify for one of these low-income home improvement grants in New Jersey, you must own and occupy the home and prove that you do not have enough income to qualify for a Section 502 loan. If you seek the low-interest home improvement loan along with the grant, you must also show proof that you will be able to repay the loan over the next 20 years.

If you are eligible, an adviser will contact you by phone and take you through the steps necessary to receive federal or state home improvement grants in New Jersey.
