Deciding to Install a Jacuzzi Tub Yourself

Everyone knows that electricity and water do not mix and a Jacuzzi tub involves both. So, before diving in headfirst and attempting to install the tub yourself, honestly assess your skill levels regarding both electricity and construction. You will need a decent amount of knowledge in both areas in order to properly install a Jacuzzi tub yourself.

Getting Started

Here are some standard instructions regarding how to install a Jacuzzi tub. Each tub will vary slightly by manufacturer, so always check the manufacturer's instructions and recommendations before installing your tub.

  • Make a supporting enclosure – The manufacturer will include the dimensions for the supporting enclosure for your specific tub. Basically, a supporting enclosure is a wood frame in which the tub will be placed.
  • Make a setting bed – This is the area of the floor by which the tub will be supported. If you are removing an existing tub, the setting bed more than likely already exists, if not, you will have to pour a concrete or mortar bed that is one to two inches thick to support the weight of the tub when it is full of water.
  • Construct the cabinet – This is the area that goes around the top perimeter of the tub and is used to place bath items and such. The materials used to construct the cabinet is completely up to you.
  • Carefully set the tub into the cabinet – Be sure not to lift the Jacuzzi tub by the pipes, doing so may damage them.
  • Check the bottom of the tub – Make sure that the entire tub rests completely on the mortar or cement bed you created. If it does not, measure the space and build your setting bed higher.
  • Contact a certified electrician – Unless you are a certified electrician, you should not complete the electrical wiring for your Jacuzzi tub. Since this type of electrical work involves electricity in close proximity to water, it poses greater risks than simple electrical work, like replacing a light switch. Stay safe and call an electrician.

Final Tips

The how to install a Jacuzzi tub instructions are very general. As stated, manufacturer recommendations vary as far as mortar and cement beds, the types of materials recommended for these setting beds, cabinet construction and so forth. So, be sure to always check the manufacturer's specific instructions before installing your Jacuzzi tub. Here are a few other final tips:

  • Take proper measurements before buying the tub – If you don't, you may end up with a tub that is either too small or too big for the space you have available.
  • Check the flooring – Even though you have to install a setting bed, check the flooring construction underneath the tub (floor joists, sub flooring etc.,) before installing your new tub. Make all necessary repairs before installing your new tub.
  • Inspect the tub thoroughly before installing – Check your new Jacuzzi tub for surface defects and defects in the plumbing and hardware that come with your tub.
  • Do not take any shortcuts – You may be tempted to fully install your Jacuzzi tub even if it doesn't rest completely on the setting bed. This is dangerous and will cause damage to your tub. These tubs are not designed to support the weight of an average adult and the weight of the water in the tub simply by the thin lip that surrounds the top of the tub.
  • Seal the tub surround sufficiently – When applying your silicone seal around the tub, make sure it is sufficient enough to prevent water from leaking down to the flooring supporting the tub. Over time, this will weaken the sub flooring and floor joists beneath the tub.
