LED Flood Lights
From LoveToKnow HomeImprovement
LED flood lights are a great way to add a bit of extra security to your home.
About LED Lights
A light emitting diode, or LED, first hit the lighting scene back in the 1920s. It wasn't until the 1960s though, when scientists could perfect the bulb to make it practical for residential and commercial use. Even then, it wasn't that practical, mostly due to its high cost and limited availability, and people still favored the incandescent bulb for their lighting needs.
Even though scientists continued to develop LED lighting technology, the bulbs failed to catch on with the general public. Not only were these bulbs expensive, but they emitted a harsh blue-white light that was not very inviting as people were used to the warm, yellow-white light emitted by the incandescent bulb. Eventually, this harsh white-blue light was fixed by Michael Bowers, who discovered a way to make the LED bulbs emit a soft, warm yellow light, similar to incandescent bulbs.
Bowers made LED lights more attractive for in home use, but his technology isn't really necessary if you're looking to use LED flood lights outside your home or business. The blue-white light emitted from non-coated LED lights is brighter and that's exactly what home and business owners want to add a little extra security to their environments.
Purchasing LED Flood Lights
As mentioned earlier, LED lights of any kind, including flood lights, cost more than incandescent or fluorescent lights. The extra cost is eventually offset by the advantages of having LED flood lights as opposed to other types of lighting. Here's a list of some of those advantages:
- Energy usage – LED lights use far less energy than other types of lighting. One nine watt LED bulb gives off as much light as a 70 watt incandescent bulb.
- Longer lasting – An LED light lasts tens of thousands of hours longer than incandescent or fluorescent bulbs.
- Durability – LED's are far more durable than the very fragile incandescent and fluorescent bulbs, making them perfect for outdoor floodlights.
Find LED Lights
If you're looking for LED lights either for in home use or for outdoor use such as flood lights, here's a short list to help you find them:
Getting More Energy Efficient with Solar LED's
By far, LED bulbs are the most energy efficient lights available on the market today. If you want to get even more energy efficient with your flood lights, check out solar LED floodlights.
Solar LED lights are similar to traditional floodlights, but come equipped with a solar panel. You can attach the solar panel to an outdoor wall, pole or install it on the ground. The panel captures the light from the sun, converts it to energy and then transfers the energy to the LED lights. These panels are both water and weather proof and are extremely durable. The wattage type of solar LED energy efficient floodlights you need to use depends upon your geographic location. Here are some general guidelines of the wattage you will need:
- Six watts – One of the lowest wattages available, these are recommended for use in only the southern most states in the United States.
- Seven watts – Great for southern, southwestern and western states.
- 10 watts – Use this wattage if you live in a state that doesn't get as much annual sunshine as say, Florida or California.
Where to Buy Solar LED's
If you've decided to go with a solar LED for your floodlights, be forewarned that they are more expensive. On the flip side though, the LED bulbs in the floodlights last an average of 22 years. This life span, of course, is dependant upon how well the lights are cared for and the climactic conditions of your area. Here are a few places online in which you can browse for the best deal on your Solar LED floodlights.
By comparison, any type of LED light, whether it's a floodlight or an indoor light is a great, long lasting, eco-friendly choice.
