Types of Light Bulbs

Incandescent

This standard light bulb uses a heated filament to radiate light. It is a widely used bulb, and very inexpensive, although energy advisers and proponents of a “green” attitude suggest switching out these older bulbs for newer, more energy-friendly units. It also has a shorter life span than modern bulb choices, averaging about 750 hours of normal use.

Best used for: A closet light, children’s toys, any other appliance or room not used often.

Fluorescent

One of the most energy-efficient choices a homeowner can make is to use fluorescent bulbs. Once a common choice for ceiling lights, fluorescents use a combination of mercury vapor and electric discharge to produce ultraviolet light.

There are two styles of fluorescents:

Linear

This is the most popular form of kitchen lighting because of its expansive cast of light. Linear fluorescents are big energy savers, too, reducing lighting energy output by nearly 50 percent.

Best used for: Kitchens, workshops, and basement recreation rooms. Note that the installation of this lighting system requires vast electrical knowledge or an electrician.

Compact

These twirly bulbs cost three to five times more than incandescent bulbs, but last years longer. This bulb is also a leader in energy savings, as it burns approximately 75 percent less energy but produces just as much light.

Best used for: Almost any type of lamp, include a desk, living room, bedside, or reading model.

Halogen

Halogen gas and a regular light bulb filament combine in a quartz envelope to create a high-wattage, yet still cost-effective light source. These burn hotter than any other type of bulb, but produce intense light and still last longer than conventional bulbs.

Best used for: Recessed lighting, counter or directional lighting, flashlights, and torchieres.

LED

LED stands for “light emitting diodes.” As an electric current passes through the diode, light is generated.

Best used for: Appliances and electronics, as well as outdoor floodlights, emergency lanterns, and under-the-counter light strips.

Full Spectrum Daylight Bulbs

The health benefits of sunlight are widely known, but if you don't want the exposure to UV rays, or the winter days are just too short, consider full spectrum daylight bulbs.

Best used for: Computing, reading or crafting. Additionally, some workplaces use full spectrum light bulbs in light fixtures, especially in a factory or windowless office.

Solar Light Bulbs

Many homeowners think solar light bulbs are a great alternative for outdoor lighting. Over the course of the day, some solar light bulbs store power within an energy cell for use at night. Other models use a combination of stored solar energy and electricity.

Best used for: Walkways, garden landscaping, and driveways. Visit Silicon Solar for more information.

Free Light Bulbs

Ask your local energy company to come to your home and provide a free energy assessment. In addition to advising you on better heating and cooling options and identifying trouble areas, representatives frequently hand out promotional goods to improve energy usage.

Homeowners will often receive:

  • A pack of compact florescent light bulbs
  • bathroom accessories, such as faucet aerators and new water-efficient shower heads
  • Draft blockers and felt door and window stripping

Each company has a different assessment policy, so call your local service for details.
