Lumber Liquidators
From LoveToKnow HomeImprovement
Lumber Liquidators has just about every type and style of hardwood flooring you can imagine.
How Lumber Liquidators Began
Back in 1993, contractor Tom Sullivan began buying unused and excess wood flooring from other contractors. He took those wood pieces and sold them out of the back of trucking yards. Three years later, Sullivan opened his first Lumber Liquidators store. From there, his stores grew in number to 42 all across the United States, employing over 500 people.
Flooring Offered
There are four main types of flooring offered at this wood floor warehouse: solid hardwood, bamboo and cork, engineered and floating and finally, laminate flooring.
Wood flooring in the solid hardwood category can be purchased either with a pre-finished protective coat (usually polyurethane) and/or stain or unfinished.
Solid Hardwood Floors

Unfinished Floors
Expect to save around ten percent of the cost of your flooring when you opt for unfinished solid wood floors. When calculating total cost, keep in mind the cost of the stain and protective coating. Quality stain usually costs around $20 per gallon and you will pay about $30 per gallon for a quality polyurethane.
Depending on the size of the room, the ten percent savings you will receive from buying unfinished floors can quickly get eaten up by the cost of the finishing materials. Lumber Liquidators has 15 types of unfinished solid wood flooring available for sale, including:
- Ash
- Australian cypress
- Birch
- Brazilian cherry
- Brazilian walnut
- Cherry
- Heart pine
- Hickory
- Maple
- New England white pine
- Oak
- Red oak
- Southern yellow pine
- Walnut
- White oak
Bamboo Floors
Bamboo and cork floors are becoming increasingly popular because the harvesting and production of these materials is very eco-friendly.
Carbonized Bamboo
If you are looking for a deeper and richer color than natural bamboo, carbonized bamboo is the way to go. Carbonized bamboo has been steamed to a point in which the naturally occurring sugars in the wood are "cooked" until they caramelize, turning the bamboo into a warm brown color, similar to that of brown sugar. Carbonized bamboo floors come pre-finished and are offered in either a vertical or horizontal flooring pattern.
Natural Bamboo
Bamboo flooring that has not gone through the carbonization process is called "Natural" bamboo. This flooring is lighter in color than the carbonized type, similar to a light tan or khaki color. Natural bamboo is also sold in horizontal and vertical flooring patterns.
Hand-scraped Bamboo
Looking for an earth friendly and rustic look for your flooring? Hand-scraped bamboo will help you achieve the warm and rustic look you are going for. This type of bamboo flooring is distressed by hand to achieve that "worn in" look.
Cork Floors
Only the bark from a cork tree is harvested, leaving the tree completely intact. This bark grows back approximately every three to six years as opposed to the up to 100 years it can take for a maple tree to mature, making cork floors extremely environmentally friendly. Lumber Liquidators offers cork flooring in sheets and easy to install tiles. Both types come pre-finished.
Engineered Flooring
Engineered flooring is not solid hardwood. Its core is often made of plywood and topped with a thin veneer of hardwood. Engineered flooring is less expensive than solid hardwoods, but looks just as lovely. The types of engineered flooring offered are:
- African santos
- American cherry
- Australian cypress
- Brazilian cherry
- Brazilian koa
- Brazilian mesquite
- Brazilian redwood
- Brazilian teak
- Brazilian walnut
- Golden teak
- Gunstock
- Maple
- Peruvian walnut
- Red oak
Floating Floors
Floating floors are installed without the use of glue or nails. The following types of floating floors are available:
- American cherry
- Bamboo
- Brazilian cherry
- Maple
- Natural hickory
- Red oak
Laminate Flooring
Laminate flooring is supposed to look like real wood floors, but misses the mark slightly. If you are looking for a quick flooring fix that will last while you save for real wood floors, laminate flooring is a good choice. Lumber Liquidators offers laminate flooring in the following widths: 6mm
