Spray painting tips will help you get the most out of your spray painting experience. If you’ve never spray painted before, or you were disappointed with your last spray painting results, you can rely on these tips to help you make your next project look professional. When you follow a specific method for your spray painting projects you’ll minimize drips, get even coverage and avoid overspray.
When to Use Spray Paint
Spray paint is suitable for a variety of different projects. It’s the least expensive of the three different painting methods – spray, roller or brush. For flat surfaces, it takes 1.2 times more paint to use a roller and 2.2 times more paint to use a brush to cover the same surface. If you want to save money on a painting project, spray paint is the way to go.
Using spray paint is also the fastest way to paint a surface which is especially helpful if you are painting an object that has an irregular shape. When you learn to spray paint the correct way with spray painting tips, it can save you a lot of time on home improvement projects.
Spray paint is a natural choice for metal objects and plastic objects. Depending on the type of spray paint you choose, you can get paint that will bond to almost any surface. Spray paint can even create interesting textures and effects.
Spray Painting Supplies
To complete a spray painting project, you’ll need a few simple supplies. These can be found at any hardware store, home improvement store or super store with a home improvement section. Depending on the size of the surface you’ll be covering, you’ll need one to several cans. It’s best to buy one more can than you think you’ll need just in case.
Most spray paints are lacquer acrylics which work on most surfaces, except for styrofoam. Read the back of the can to be sure that the brand you are selecting is safe for the surface you’ll be painting on. If you’re unsure which type is best for your specific project, ask the staff at the hardware store.
In addition to your spray paint cans, you’ll also need a primer paint can if you are covering a dark color with a light one. Primer will also help hold the color on slick surfaces like metal or plastic.
You’ll also need several strengths of sandpaper. Buy a few sheets of 800 grit sand paper, 1000 grit sand paper, 1500 grit sand paper and 2000 grit sand paper. Rubbing compound and a microfiber cloth are also helpful. Since spray paint can often get all over the place, it’s a good idea to get some plastic sheets to cover your work area.
Professional Spray Painting Tips
Following these spray painting tips will help you get great coverage on your surface. Your project will benefit from patience, so make sure to take enough time to complete each of these steps.
- Cover the work area with plastic sheets and tape off any surfaces where you don’t want the color to appear. Spray paint has a tendency to spread over surfaces so be sure to tape and cover thoroughly.
- Sand down the surface so that it will be easy for the paint to bond to the object.
- Apply a light coat of primer. While it is still wet, sand it with a piece of 800 grit sandpaper. Wipe down the surface with a micro fiber cloth.
- Apply the color with smooth movements across the surface of the object. Start at the bottom of the object to prevent dropping.
- Continue painting using several light coats. Use the 800 grit sand paper while the object is still wet. Wipe with a microfiber cloth.
- Spray a clear coat, if necessary. Then follow up with a sanding with the 800 grit sandpaper, then the 1000, then the 1500 and then the 2000 grit sandpaper.
- Rub the surface with a rubbing compound to remove the marks from the 2000 grit sand paper.
Use these spray painting tips to make your next spray painting project a success. Once you’ve reviewed these tips, you’ll be ready to paint any project.
